Fashion Forward – Check out kids’ fashions worth falling for

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

Michelle Porcaro of Mount Pleasant is all about style when it comes to her two children.

Sullivan Porcaro, 4, and his little sister Saylor, 2, are always well put-together.

“I like the whole outfit to flow,” their mother says. “You know, dressier, kind of matchy-matchy.”

For Porcaro, quality is key when purchasing clothes. She often shops at consignment stores for well-made designer clothing. She says she has a more difficult time finding cool clothes for her son than her daughter.

“I always end up spending more money on his clothes. It’s harder to dress boys.”

Erin Jackson, general manager at The Gap in Towne Centre, says quality clothing is better simply because it lasts longer. The mother of two says a rock and roll theme is the trend this fall – and denim dominates.

“Kids want to look cool like a rock star – like Justin Bieber. It’s a skater look, really athletic and active. But clothes shouldn’t hurt.”

For boys, really stretchy and comfortable jeans are a must. Soft denim is a favorite for girls as well, but layering is key to staying in style this season. Skirts worn over skinny jeans or leggings is the way to go.

As far as sizing goes, Jackson says parents should know their child’s height and waist circumference so store staff can easily find clothing that fits properly. Kids’ clothing is designed to fit by age, but if children are bigger – or smaller – than other children their age it’s best to be prepared.

“But there is a perfect jean for every size and every kid.”
