Susan Leiby, head of South Carolina Autism Society, and her autistic son have taken advantage of the The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry’s Super Stars program every month since it began last October.
“Many times, families must choose between recreational activities and therapy for their children. CML Super Stars eliminates that – we can just come, play and enjoy each other as a family,” Leiby says.
The program has served more than 580 children and their families from across the tri-county so far. This summer the program is scheduled for three Saturdays: June 6, July 11 and Aug. 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We’ve seen the CML Super Stars program serve as a meeting place for families to share resources, ideas and concerns about raising a child with special needs,” says Denis Chirles, executive director of CML. “We’re honored to be working with our special needs community to better serve our Lowcountry families.”
Upcoming special guests and activities include Catherine McGuinn of Adaptive Gardens highlighting horticultural therapy activities including seeding/planting and watering in the all-organic CML Kid Gardens.
In July Lucy Swaffield of the Special Olympics of South Carolina Youth Athlete program will provide a fun-filled obstacle course and activities to do with children. In August CML special guests will include staff from Project Rex, an eight-week therapy program at MUSC for children with high-functioning autism. For more information visit explorecml.org.
