February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating all the way back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentine’s Day ranks second only to Christmas in the number of greeting cards sent. Try making one of these “Love Bugs” for an original Valentine’s Day card this month.

Materials

√ Black pipe cleaner

√ Red medium-size pom-pom

√ 2 googly eyes

√ 2 pieces of construction paper

√ Red Hots candies

√ Plastic container from a “gumball” machine

√ Black Sharpie marker

√ Glue

√ Glue stick

√ Scissors or pinking shears

Instructions

1) To form the wings of the bug you will need two sheets of colored constructions paper. Glue the two pieces of paper together using a glue stick. Now, cut out a heart shape that is about the size of a canteloupe.

2) Fill the plastic container with Red Hots candies and replace the cap. Use a black marker to draw hearts on the plastic container. Turn the plastic container upside down and glue in the middle of the construction paper heart.

3) Glue googly eyes on the pompom. Cut a black pipe cleaner in half and glue to the top of the pompom to make the bug’s antennas. Now that your pom pom looks like a face, glue it in front of the plastic container and then let dry.
