Each of the three Jack’s Cosmic Dog locations now have a book case full of young children’s books for children to take home and read. “Take A Book, Give A Book” is a lending library aimed at encouraging family literacy. Children are encouraged to either return the book when they are finished reading it, or to bring in another book to share.

“I know the importance of reading to kids every night,” says Jack Hurley, owner.  “We read to our two sons from birth until they were 10 or 11 and they are now avid readers.  But so many children in our own community do not have books in their home. We want to help with that.”

For children ages 1 to 5 Hurley is part of Begin With Books, a pre-school literacy program based on Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Begin With Books provides a free book every month by mail to any child from birth to age 5 in specific Charleston County zip codes. The books are age appropriate, culturally diverse, and are mailed directly to the children’s homes.

Parents register their children at outreach events where they learn about the importance of reading to their children. The program currently serves families in St. Paul’s Parish, Awendaw, McClellanville, Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island.

Information about Jack’s Cosmic Dogs reading programs is available at Jack’s Cosmic Dogs’ locations in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley and on Folly Road.
